The Spirit of Love
“Why do we and the Pharisees fast,[a] but your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. - Mt 9:14-15
The Pharisees are fasting today, grieving what they don’t have and waiting for what is yet to come. But the disciples are ready to party. Jesus is with them and they are seizing the moment, celebrating the lingering life of their loving companion.
Our year of pandemic feels like an endless fast. We continue to grieve the lives that are lost and pray for our long-awaited future. But our Gospel reminds us that, even in the desolate days of enduring isolation and loneliness, Jesus is with us. The Spirit of love is alive.
In these Lenten days, how might we tend our tired hearts so they can receive the promised gifts of Easter peace and joy? How will Jesus come along side us and share in our great feast, together?
Deep River.
My home is over Jordan.
Deep River, Lord,
I want to cross over into campground.
Oh, don't you want to go,
To the Gospel feast;
That Promised Land,
Where all is peace?
Deep River.
My home is over Jordan.
Oh, deep River, Lord,
I want to cross over into campground.
