Epiphany

POST ARTWORK: The Annunciation and the Adoration of the Magi, by Clementine Hunter, 1886-1988

a star to discover,

a dream to follow, and,

a being within ourselves to bring to life.

-From an Iranian Christmas carol

We celebrate the feast of Epiphany today, a small narrative within our profound and unfolding, religious story. Epiphany celebrates the wise ones and dreamers, calling us all to be seekers of the light.

As a wise one and spiritual director, L. Pat Carroll wanted us all to see our lives as a story rather than “just one damn thing after another.” The “religious challenge is to notice,” to reflect on and savor our ordinary joys and pains. “Once savored,” said Pat, “the fruits are sweet, indeed.”

Pat O’Leary, SJ, was endeared by many as a spiritual companion, artist, dreamer, and friend. He travelled with light, hope, and humor, engaging all in a deeper, spiritual journey for themselves: “We don’t like leaving. But God loves becoming.”

In deep gratitude for these powerful teachers in my life, inspiring wisdom figures, star-gazers, encouragers, mentors, and the dearest of friends.

Now cracks these noble and beautiful hearts. Good night, sweet Princes, and flights of angels sing thee both to thy rest.

Becoming

Once or twice in a lifetime

A man or woman may choose

A radical leaving, having heard

Lech lecha - Go forth.

God disturbs us toward our destiny

By hard events

And by freedom’s now urgent voice

Which explode and confirm who we are.

We don’t like leaving,

But God loves becoming.
